In Memory of Randy Jones
Randy Jones was a San Diego legend—a Cy Young Award winner and the first player having his number retired (35) and 1st to be inducted into the Padres Hall of Fame. He won 16 games before the All-Star break, a remarkable achievement that has never been matched, and recorded both a win and a save in All-Star Game competition. Randy’s extraordinary career produced numerous records and accomplishments that remain part of Padres history.
His impact, however, extended far beyond the baseball field.
For more than 40 years, Randy supported charitable golf tournaments throughout San Diego before finally putting his own name behind an event.
In 2012, Curtis Gandy approached Randy at Randy’s restaurant with an idea scribbled on a napkin. The concept was simple: invite only the winning teams from San Diego charity golf tournaments, provide scorekeepers to ensure every score was legitimate, and send the champions to Pebble Beach aboard a private jet.
Randy said yes within ten minutes.
The Randy Jones Invitational was born.
Randy passed away in 2025, but the tournament—and everything it represents—will continue in his memory. Now officially known as the Randy Jones Memorial Invitational, the event honors his remarkable achievements, generosity and lifelong commitment to the San Diego community.
The sponsors, brands and teams that participate each year become a lasting part of Randy’s legacy.

The GOAT—San Diego’s Greatest of All Time.
